George
The
Diver
Hamilton
Quarter
Redevelopment
In
the
1990's Wirral
Borough Council
embarked upon
an important
regeneration project for
Birkenhead town
centre to
build upon
the substantive
cultural connections
and commercial
investments in
the area,
to maximise
the environmental
and economic
development of
the town.
A major
element of
this initiative
was the
refurbishment of
the Hamilton
Quarter Square
in response
to the
development of
a new
Warner Brothers
cinema. Central
to this
project was
the need
to
"mark"
the
Council's
leisure centre
so that
it complimented
the new
building and
was visible
to potential
visitors.
In
conjunction
with the
developers and
architects responsible
the
Borough Council
commissioned us
to develop
designs for
the town
square and
to design
and make
an appropriate
sculpture for
the leisure
centre.
George
the
Diver was
designed to
enhance the
visibility of
the leisure
centre and
to signal
the use
to which
the building
is put.
At 8
metres long
and in
polished stainless
steel the
sculpture is
designed to
withstand the
local marine
environment with
very little
maintenance and
to reflect
changing weather
conditions and
night-time lighting.
