Various
Bastwell
Regeneration
Project
The
twin
foundations
of
this
project
are
urban
regeneration
and
cultural
recognition.
In
1997
Blackburn
with
Darwen
Borough
Council
embarked
upon
a
major
refurbishment
of
a
Blackburn
Town
Centre
housing
estate
with
a
predominantly
Muslim
population.
In
partnership
with
Gleeson
Homes
and
with
the
active
involvement
of
the
local
community
they
commissioned
a
series
of
artworks
to
enliven
the
public
spaces
and
help
foster
a
sense
of
pride
in
and
ownership
of
the "new" development.
We
were
involved
in
drawing
up
an
arts
strategy
for
the
area,
identifying
suitable
sites,
potential
partners
and
key
outcomes
for
the
intended
arts
strategy.
Following
from
this
several
sculptural
pieces
which
were
rooted
in
ideas
explored
with
community
groups
-
through
the
schools,
mosques
and
community
centres
-
which
are
functional
but
also
provide
a
strong
sense
of
uniqueness
and
place.
In
addition
to
seating
and
markers
for
the
major
community
buildings
the
work
includes
railing
panels
and
litter
bins.
The
design
for
many
of
these
functional
items
evolved
from
workshops
with
various
community
groups.
Series
of
three
markers
5
metres
tall.
All
pieces
in
stainless
steel.
